Photography. Honestly.

Spencer Johnson—photographer

Some of my earliest memories are of joining my dad in the darkroom at the university photography lab. Under a dim, red light, he would place a blank sheet of film into the chemical bath. Within a few moments an image would appear. To 3-year-old me, it seemed like magic.

With the advent of digital photography, the process has lost some of the alchemy it once had, but 30 years later there’s still something mystical about pushing a button on a little black box and having an image come out.

I love the feeling of perfectly capturing your moment, your expression, your feelings. I love when you reveal something genuine about yourself in the way you smile, or scowl, or shrug. Most of all, I love your delighted surprise when you see the final photograph—when it’s magic for you too.
